Mobile WiMax to be rolled out in China next year Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has already shipped mobile WiMax equipment to one customer in China and is in talks with a second customer about supplying similar equipment, a company executive said today. "I cannot disclose any names," said Hwan Woo Chung, a vice president at Samsung's Mobile WiMax Group, speaking at a conference in Singapore. "You will see early next year what will happen there."

Flat-Panel TV Showdown Seen Samsung says LCDs will take on plasma in market for 50-inch TVs. Sumner Lemon, IDG News Service Samsung Electronics wants to see TVs made using LCD panels compete more closely against plasma display panel screens, a company executive said Monday. PDP and LCD TVs occupy different segments of the flat-panel television market, with PDPs generally used for larger screens, or those that measure more than 40 inches across the diagonal. However, Samsung hopes that a new factory set to start production late next year will permit volume production of LCD TVs with screens that measure 50 inches or more across the diagonal.

Demand for electronics seen slowing Anecdotally, equity analysts are seeing corporate book-to-build rates falling for electronic firms in the US, according to UBS Investment Bank managing director, deputy head of global economics Paul Donovan. "Economies such as Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, with substantial semiconductor sectors, can expect a slowdown in demand," he told a press briefing yesterday. While this was clearly a signal of slowing demand for electronic products, it was not a signal of "negative demand," Donovan said.

AMD Doubles Supercomputer Share as Intel Loses Ground Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) gained serious ground on the new World's Top 500 Supercomputers list, as its larger rival, Intel, lost ground. Intel still is first, used in a total of 261 systems in the top 500, or 52.2 percent of those systems. But that's down from 333 or 66.6 percent. By contrast the AMD Opteron family of server processors passed IBM Power to become the second most common processor family on the Top 500 list. AMD Opteron processors were used in 113 systems of 22.6 percent, up from 55 systems or 11 percent on the last list.

Freescale Buyout Gets Shareholder Go-Ahead The private equity buyout of Freescale Semiconductor Inc. has gotten a green light from shareholders. The company announced today that the acquisition of Freescale by a consortium of private equity firms has garnered shareholder approval in a landslide vote. According to Freescale, approximately 99 percent of stockholders present and voting at the latest meeting adopted the merger agreement, under the terms of which Freescale stockholders will be entitled to receive $40 per share at the time of closing. The number of shares voting to adopt the merger agreement represents approximately 73 percent of the total number of shares outstanding and entitled to vote, the company said.
